What is Magnetic Therapy?
Magnetic Therapy or Magneto Therapy uses a magnetic device to relieve pain and facilitate healing by placing it on the patient’s body or near it.
Origin of Magnetic Therapy
Ancient Greeks very confidently believed in the therapeutic powers of lodestones. Lodestones are natural magnetic rocks. The use of Magnetic Therapy was popularized later by a Swiss born physician and alchemist Philippus von Hohenheim aka Paracelsus. It is said that he used magnets to draw diseases and illnesses from human body.
How does Magnetic Therapy work?
Every magnet has a magnetic field around it. Magnetic Therapy believes hat these magnetic fields can penetrate the human body. By passing Electromagnetic current Magnetic Therapists can influence the functioning of cells and improve the functioning of various organ systems.
Small magnets are placed precisely over a body area that has some degree of intact circulation. These magnets are secured on the body part with the help of tape or Velcro. When connected to the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines these magnets generate a magnetic field with varying gauss range.
Depending on the severity of your pain you will have to wear these magnets for varying time periods beginning from five minutes to a several weeks.
Effect of Magnetic Therapy
Magnetic Therapy is used mostly to relieve pain in joints and muscles. People who have faith in Magnetic Therapy suggest that magnets have the power to reduce stress, relieve problems like insomnia and migraine too. They affirm that magnetic therapy can cure central nervous system disorders like seizures.
In 1999, a study published in the American Journal of Pain Management suggested that magnetic foot insoles were shown to be effective in reducing foot pain in people who had diabetes.
However, like all alternative medical sciences and therapies Magnetic therapy remains controversial. Mainstream doctors do not believe in the theory of magnetic therapy. But this doesn’t discourage people from going ahead with Magnetic Therapy. There is rigorous research going on in the field of Magnetic Therapy which continues to keep up people’s faith in it.
